Gary: It is a common wood-nymph, subspecies Cercyonis pegala incana. I believe their numbers are becoming fewer in this area due to habitat loss and pesticide use. This one seemed to be fond of a willow tree we have in our yard and it or one of its friends has been hanging around for the past week or so.
Comment from Lunabelle Loiseau-Tremblay: The butterfly is red-listed in BC.
