2009 – CLAM GARDENS

(Authored by Judith Williams, mounted by Lynne Jordan)

Original drawings, photographs and text were supplied by Judith Williams from her published book Clam Gardens, Aboriginal Mariculture on Canada’s West Coast.

This was an explanation of the First Nations’ ancient clam beaches cultivated for many centuries along the BC coast – but only recently “discovered” to exist in the early 2000s.  These clam gardens are what sustained coastal Natives through many winters and they continue to be used for harvesting butter clams by First Nations today.
